The gas gets shut off at the valve first. Then the glass front comes off, if it's a sealed direct-vent insert. We pull the burner and log set, noting placement before anything moves. The pilot hood gets inspected for spider webbing and lint. A millivolt meter goes on the thermocouple or thermopile leads. We read output cold, then read it again with the flame steady. Weak millivolts explain most fireplaces that light and then die.
