What actually goes into putting gas in your fireplace

Are you adding a gas log set, or a sealed direct-vent insert? They are different jobs. A log set drops into an existing firebox and burns up the open flue. The damper gets clamped permanently open, and that clamp is not optional. A sealed direct-vent insert is a closed appliance. It needs its own coaxial pipe run up the old flue to a terminating cap.

The existing chimney decides most of it. Open masonry fireplaces with clay tile liners usually have room for the liner run. Factory-built zero-clearance prefab units in metal chases are fussier. Those carry a listing label inside the opening. That label names which inserts the manufacturer allows. Cracked refractory panels get replaced first, not covered up.

Then the gas side. Many older fireboxes here have a capped stub and a key valve, sized for a small log set only. Insert burners often want more. We check the pipe run, the shutoff location, and whether a sediment trap exists.

Near Huntington Harbour and Sunset Beach, salt fog eats terminations and chase covers. A rusted-through chase cover above a new insert will drip on it. Fix the top before spending on the appliance below.

What happens after you call us

  1. 1

We look first, open the damper, check the cap and flue, then give you a firm price at the door. The look is free, and if it needs masonry work we don't do, we'll say so.

  2. 2

Call and tell us what you're seeing, a draft, a smell, a gas insert that clicks but won't light. We book a two hour window and text you when the truck is twenty minutes out.

  3. 3

We look first, open the damper, check the cap and flue, then give you a firm price at the door. The look is free, and if it needs masonry work we don't do, we'll say so.
